A recent Dr. Pepper ad campaign has caused quite a stir among female customers. The commercial advertises Dr. Pepper’s new diet soda, but aims to squash the mentality that diet soda is only for women. The commercial’s attempt at humor instructs females to go back to watching their romantic comedies and drinking “lady drinks” while men tend to their action movies and Dr. Pepper sodas. Yikes, Dr. Pepper.
A Ragan.com article explained that Dr. Pepper may have been attempting to be clever or segment the market in an intelligent way, but I’d say it’s safe to say they failed. While I understand they were trying to reach out to a male audience that may normally pass over a diet drink on the shelves, why did they have to drag women down in the process?
I hope they have a good crisis PR team because their customers are not happy. Dr. Pepper is being slammed on their Facebook page, the AP and Village Voice. What do you think? Ladies, are you offended by Dr. Pepper’s new ad campaign?
