GlobalCom’s market barometer: Portugal 2011

This week we talked to Ricardo Durand, Account Manager at Executive Decisions Communication (EDC) about the latest market trends in Portugal.*

1. Which industries/markets are booming at the moment in Portugal?

Technology driven start-ups are booming in Portugal at the moment. I think that some entrepreneurs are seeing the economic crisis as an opportunity to enter the market and create new businesses in the IT sector. This means it is also a great market for PR agencies that help enterprises addressing the social networks properly. These web agencies grow like mushrooms in Portugal and we in EDC have already established a plan to offer that kind of advice and services to our existing and new clients.

2. What makes Portugal currently so interesting for this industry?

Ricardo DurandPortugal is known as an early adopter for new technologies and both people and companies are aware of this tendency. The web management and IT industries are growing rapidly because clients are eager to have the latest tech features at their disposal.

3. Why should companies from these industries start doing Public Relations in Portugal?

I think that this is especially important for the start-ups that I’ve mentioned in the first answer. A good PR agency can help these IT start-ups to reach the media in a more effective and sustainable way, with a good backup and crucial advice on what they can do to make a good impression in magazines, newspapers and even on television. Most start-ups are very business driven and don’t have any concrete ideas on what it takes to have a strong PR and marketing plan to deliver PR results throughout the year. So, I think that the support offered by of agencies like EDC is very important for a company’s success in these industries.
